Looking at all this crap with Medaka objectively, I guess you could say that we’ve been lucky.

Up until recently, the Medaka Box fandom was naught but a core groups of friends enjoying all the ups and downs that it brought us.

With the addition of the anime, it became more widespread. This was bound to happen. It happens to every fandom.

I mean look at the Hetalia fandom. It was but a simple online manga until the anime came out and you know what happened there.

Things could be much much worse than they are.

YEAH THIS WAS MY WORST FEAR WITH THE ANIME COMING OUT…

alright i

but i’m sick of this shit so listen up. i’ll even use proper typing so you know i give half of a shit

Medaka is supposed to be this way. Her character is taking tried and tested familiar shonen tropes (for a few examples, power ups out of nowhere, skimpy outfits on girls for no reason, and the fact that ~people can be cured of their evil with the power of friendship~) and amping it up to the point where you can recognize how ridiculous it is. I have no idea where you got the fact that “everyone brags about how great she is”. Most of the main characters at this point in time either feel neutral to her (Kikaijima, Zenkichi) or dislike her (Unzan, Shiranui). Minor characters do, I’ll give you that, but they’re more of plot devices than anything. Paying attention to the narration, you’ll see that even though Zenkichi is her childhood friend and has some love for her as well, he doesn’t put her on a pedestal, or call her a monster, or anything like that — he humanizes her by sharing anecdotes, talking about her fears, things like that. The entire show is definitely not “Wow, Medaka sure is great and amazing and smoking hot and everyone is in love with her wow!!!”. If anything, Medaka Box’s early arcs are like, “Well, everyone thinks Medaka is amazing and wonderful, but what is the girl behind all that? What is she really thinking?” It becomes so much more than that as time goes on.

… Anyway, since you specifically said “portrayed poorly in the anime” you should know this, because up until episode 9 the series followed the goddamn manga almost to the letter.

I’m not going to lie — I love Medaka. I think she’s a wonderful character with a lovely background and personality. I really dislike the fact that the phrase “Mary Sue, Mary Sue!” gets tossed around over and over again, since it’s probably the most basic part of Medaka — it’s like literally judging a book not even based on the cover yet, but the paper it’s wrapped in. Was she designed with the idea of “~~Mary Sue~~” in mind? As sad as it is to say, probably yes. But she goes far beyond that, even within the course of the anime (whatever your opinion on it might be).

tl;dr
